Twenty-Two—Violet

“Oh, I know!” Maura said, a smile breaking over her face. “Jerrod can drive Violet home.”

“He needed some time off this afternoon,” Norman said, and he sounded irritated about it. Like, how dare his elderly butler take a minute or two to regroup after falling and hurting himself while trying to help Norman’s fiancée?

I gave Maura a little wave goodbye, then let Julian lead me to his office, his hair standing on end the way it did after he’d run his hands through it a few times. Helped him think, he’d told me. After shutting the door, he said, “I thought you could use an out.”

I let out a relieved breath. At least nothing new was wrong. “Thank you. What an absolute wiener that guy is. Hey, can I go home yet?”

Julian gave me a kiss, then hugged me. “Yes, but carbon monoxide can be serious stuff, Vi. And you’ve just recovered from your concussion.”

“I’ve got a hard head.”

He gave me a look. “You’re starting to sound like Irma.”

“Take it back!”

His eyes twinkled.

“I need to do some work,” I said. “And then I have to do some digging about the security system they’re running over at Harbour House.” I caught Julian up on how we’d gotten locked in the garage, the AirTag in Maura’s snazzy handbag, and how Irma was currently running my ex-employee’s ex-boyfriend out of town.

“So, why hasn’t anyone called the police about what happened at Harbour House?” Julian asked. “The ex was there right before everything went down, right?”

“True, but if we can’t prove he did anything, it’s better to get him away from her, no? And Maura says he’s a Luddite, so I don’t see how he could have figured out how to hack into the system. Plus, over eighty percent of network or app breaches come from inside. It’s much more likely that someone at the house did it.”

“Someone like Norman, you mean.”

“Yes, except Norman’s claiming that the security company admits their system froze at the time we were in there and that what happened was just a technology glitch. And they think their system might have turned Maura’s car on.”

Julian’s eyebrows rose. “But you don’t believe them? Or is it Norman you don’t believe?”

“Wireless technology isn’t witchcraft, Julian. If the door lock and the car’s starter were running on the same frequency and their command set was similar, that could potentially be a problem. But the security company would know that when they designed their system and would pick a higher communication band for their app to get around it. I mean, predicting that cars with automatic starter technology will be in garages that have digital locks isn’t exactly rocket science.”

“So you think they’re lying?”

“Nope. I think Norman is. Now, all I need to do is prove it.”

“Can’t you just call the alarm company and grill them?” He grinned.

“I mean, I could, but they won’t tell me anything about the system at Harbour House. All that type of data would be confidential.” I ran my own hands through my hair and sighed.
